Sandra Tiersch
Sandra Tiersch is a German costume designer and Gewandmeisterin. At the start of the millennium, she studied social pedagogy, specialising in aesthetics and communication, at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. She then spent several years working in the independent theatre scene, both on stage and behind the scenes. During this time, she collaborated artistically with various groups, including prison inmates and people with disabilities, at venues such as the Alarmtheater in Bielefeld and the Blaumeier Atelier in Bremen.
Later, Tiersch worked as a DJ, concert organiser and agent for musicians in the experimental and independent scenes, for example for the pianist Nils Frahm. Since 2011, Tiersch has focused on costume design and, in 2014, obtained the title of master tailor in Dresden. She gained experience as an assistant in the film and advertising industries and at the renowned Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, where she collaborated with renowned artists such as the director Romeo Castellucci, the performance artist Angelica Liddell and the choreographer Constanza Macras. This was followed by engagements with the Berlin-based dance ensemble Laborgras, before she finally joined the costume department at Sasha Waltz & Guests in 2018, where she took over as head of the costume department from 2022 to 2025. Her most recent projects as a costume designer include the dance pieces »In C – nächste Generation« (2022) and »Welleneffekt« (2024) by the children’s dance company of Sasha Waltz & Guests, and the Kreuzberg-set cinema comedy »Mojo Royal« (2026), directed by Ben von Grafenstein. Tiersch currently lives and works in Berlin.
