Sasha Waltz' »St John Passion« at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam

Sasha Waltz’s timeless adaptation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s »St John Passion« returns to the stage. Following its world premiere in spring 2024 as part of the Salzburg Easter Festival and further major performances at the Dijon Opera and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the production can be seen from 10 to 26 November at the renowned Dutch National Opera – in collaboration with the Netherlands Bach Society.

In spring 2024, Sasha Waltz dedicated herself to an outstanding sacred work in music history for the first time with the »St. John Passion« (BWV 245) by Johann Sebastian Bach. To mark the 300th anniversary of its premiere, she staged it in her choreography as a universal, timeless story about the human search for truth, justice and hope, even beyond its religious origins.

While the »St. John Passion« deals with human themes such as power and powerlessness, violence and betrayal as well as the longing for redemption, Bach's music in conjunction with the language of dance is able to provide comfort in dark times.

The world premiere opened the Salzburg Easter Festival on 22 March 2024 at the Felsenreitschule, before the work was performed at the Opéra de Dijon on 30 and 31 March 2024 and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 4 and 5 November. Sasha Waltz’s »St John Passion« is now coming to the Dutch National Opera from 10 to 26 November.

Sasha Waltz brings her vision of the »St. John Passion« to life under the musical direction of Leonardo García Alarcón together with 11 dancers from Sasha Waltz & Guests, the Netherlads Bach Society, the choir of the Dutch National Opera and well-known soloists, all moving together on stage.
