Reflektor Sasha Waltz

From 11 to 14 March 2027, Sasha Waltz will return to the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, bringing with her an entire festival programme that she has curated especially for this exciting venue.

»I think about space before I think about movement« – this is how world-renowned choreographer Sasha Waltz describes the foundation of her art, with which she has written a defining chapter in modern German dance history. For her, nothing is merely a backdrop: space, light, music and bodies each tell their own story, sometimes through high-energy movement, sometimes through their mere presence. She shares a special connection with the Elbphilharmonie: even before its official opening on 11 January 2017, she staged a performance in the foyers with more than 80 musicians and dancers, bringing the spectacular architecture to life – »a firework of music and dance,« as she described it. For the Elbphilharmonie’s tenth anniversary, Sasha Waltz now returns with her company for a long weekend she has curated herself – appearing on stage twice: in an intimate encounter with cellist Anastasia Kobekina and Bach’s cello suites, and, together with a group of dancers, in »for the time being«, a radical focus on the present moment set to the live generated soundscapes of experimental composer Diego Noguera.

On two evenings, she brings the explosive force of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 to the stage. In the project »Fluence«, dance enters into a spontaneous, partly improvised dialogue with music, this time spanning works from across the centuries. Also featured in the »Reflektor« programme is the post-industrial band The Young Gods, who join Waltz’s company to revive Terry Riley’s »In C«, which received standing ovations in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie in 2024 and now returns for a powerful festival finale. Audiences experience all of this up close, sometimes in the midst of the action, or, as in the work of Ayumi Paul, even as an integral part of the performance.

THE PROGRAMME:

BACH CELLO DANCE

Anastasia Kobekina & Sasha Waltz

11. March, 7 pm

12. March 2027, 5:30 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal

In »BACH CELLO DANCE«, two outstanding artists meet in an extraordinary dialogue of music and dance: Anastasia Kobekina, the most important cellist of her generation, and the internationally renowned choreographer Sasha Waltz. The two extraordinary artists explore Bach's music with cello and body in an experimental spirit. In a sensitive interplay, they meet in an intimate dance that allows the emotionality of Bach's music to be experienced in a whole new way.

Beethoven 7

Sasha Waltz & Guests

12. 13. March 2027, 7:30 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal

In »Beethoven 7«, Sasha Waltz and an ensemble of 14 dancers devote themselves to the complete »Symphony No. 7 in A major (op. 92)« by Ludwig van Beethoven. This music, composed in 1812, resonates with questions of his time that still play a role for us today: the failure of a revolution, the (forced) return to old traditions, the friction between the desire for social transformation and restoration and the associated loss of freedom and future prospects. At the beginning of the evening, Sasha Waltz takes up these themes and reinterprets them from a contemporary perspective to the live electronic sounds of the Chilean composer Diego Noguera with the title »Freiheit/Extasis«, which were commissioned and developed during the creation process. How do personal freedom and social constraints relate to each other?

Ayumi Paul

The Singing Project

13. March 2027, 5:30 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal

Song as language, as encounter, as connection: Since 2018, the artist and composer Ayumi Paul has explored a wide range of vocal traditions, asking how people can connect through their voices – beyond time and place, free from sheet music and the pursuit of perfection. For Paul, singing is an open space that takes shape through shared practice. With »The Singing Project«, she invites the audience to become part of the music itself, part of the soundscape. This is not a conventional concert but one that comes to life through the very people who take part.

Diego Noguera

Conzert

13. March 2027, 10 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal

Berlin based, Chilean composer, producer and performer Diego Noguera has established an international reputation through a compelling fusion of classical and experimental music. Nogueras artistic path has repeatedly crossed that of Sasha Waltz, collaborating on acclaimed projects such as »Beethoven 7« and »for the time being«. It is therefore only fitting that Waltz has invited Noguera to perform at the »Reflektor« festival she has curated. Through the richly layered textures of acoustic and electronic instruments, combined with the use of voice and space, Noguera creates a fully immersive musical landscape that allows everyday concerns to fade away, leaving audiences to return home in an almost trance-like state.

for the time being

Sasha Waltz & Guests

14. March 2027, 5:30 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal

In »for the time being«, a collective practice of experiencing the moment, the ensemble draws from a shared source of living imagination that unfolds through movement, voice and language. In a ritual of presence, inspired among other techniques by Mary Starks Whitehouse’s »Authentic Movement«, the performers immerse themselves in altered states of consciousness, by opening the senses, awakening memories, and following emotional and physical impulses in all their fragile intimacy and complexity. The practice is rooted in the principles of »Deep Listening« (Pauline Oliveros) and in a radical embrace of every action and reaction within the collective, free from judgement. Through continuous mutual inner and outer witnessing, and through the ever shifting energy of the space itself, a kaleidoscope of the present comes into being: a vivid encounter with the here and now. The audience witnesses and becomes part of this active practice and a moment-born process of becoming and transforming.

In C

Sasha Waltz & Guests / Terry Riley / The Young Gods

14. March 2027, 8 pm

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal

Sasha Waltz’s »In C« is a vibrant exploration of the world of minimal music and, at the same time, a dance performance celebrating democracy. Performed live together with the Swiss post-industrial band »The Young Gods« and their hypnotic, high-energy interpretation of »In C«, the audience can look forward to a spectacular finale to the festival – back in January 2024, this collaboration earned a standing ovation in the Großer Saal of the Elbphilharmonie.
