Sasha Waltz & Guests - the new book
Sasha Waltz & Guests has enjoyed international success with its contemporary choreographies, dialogue projects, choreographed operas and films. To mark this occasion, Sasha Waltz, together with people who have accompanied her on her journey, is now looking back and forward in a comprehensive book publication, opening up new perspectives on her work. As the choreographer herself aptly describes, »an ensemble is a living archive.« But how does an ensemble remember?
Beyond the mere chronology of events, the book focuses on an aspect of memory that guarantees the repeatability of dance: notation. Sasha Waltz's »scores« consist of fascinating terms that each designate individual choreographic figures. The book takes up 65 of these so-called »codes« in the form of an encyclopaedic cabinet of curiosities and removes them from their original context. Through links to art history and commentary by guest contributors, a creative reorganisation of Sasha Waltz's oeuvre emerges, bringing the scores to life in a new light.
Since 1993, Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig have been realising their shared dream of a dance company as an ever-changing artistic community in Berlin and internationally with many allies. The complete works of Sasha Waltz & Guests to date comprise over 80 productions, involving more than 300 artistic and scientific »guests« from architecture, visual arts, choreography, design, film, literature, fashion, music, opera, philosophy, sociology, dance and theatre from over 30 countries.
