Showing of Children- and Youth Dance Company Sasha Waltz & Guests

On 4 and 5 July 2026, the approximately 100 young dancers aged between 6 and 22 from the Sasha Waltz & Guests Children’s and Youth Dance Company will showcase what they have been working on over the past year at their annual performance at the Radialsystem in Berlin. Divided into four age groups, they will present four new productions over the weekend.

»Funke«

The youngest dancers (aged 6–8) have been exploring the different elements for several years now. Having already explored water and earth, this group has turned its attention to the element of fire and will open this year’s performances with a fiery dance that is sure to set the stage alight, accompanied live on the piano by Neslihan Schmidt.

»Rain«

In their new piece, »Rain«, children aged 9 to 11 explore the many facets of rain: gentle and playful, or wild and powerful. What does a light shower or a heavy downpour feel like? Accompanied musically by Alexander Nickmann, the young dancers transform drops into movement and storms into rhythm, bringing the rain to life on stage – at times delicate and playful, at others stormy and serious.

»BOLERO«

A rhythm begins.

It remains, yet changes everything.

This year, the young people (aged 12–14) have discovered Maurice Ravel’s masterpiece »Bolero« and are interpreting it from their own perspective using a language all of their own. »BOLERO« transforms repetition into a space of perception. Movement emerges, deepens and evolves without losing its form. Dance becomes a journey to the self, to one’s own body in flux. What happens when something remains the same? How does what we feel, see and express change?

The young dancers explore how energy, presence and expression develop through repetition. In this way, the music is not merely accompanied, but physically experienced as growth, change and tension over time. The young people learn that repetition does not mean stagnation, but development, and that small changes can have a big impact.

»SPLITTER & GANZ«

In »SPLITTER & GANZ«, around 30 dancers from the youth dance company (aged 14 and over) embark on a physical exploration of identity, belonging and self-determination. Individual stories and collective experiences intertwine, revealing how identity is shaped by origin, environment and social structures, whilst remaining in a state of constant flux. Over several months, a process-oriented and participatory approach gives rise to a piece that is actively co-created by the young people under the guidance of choreographers Wibke Storkan and Sebastian Abarbanell. In close dialogue with live music by Sofia Albanese and costumes and scenography by soffía ralfsdóttir, improvisational structures are combined with jointly developed choreographic material, exploring both individual and collective potential. The audience is invited to share a communal space with the performers, thereby contributing to a vibrant co-existence.

The children's and youth dance company of Sasha Waltz & Guests

A playful approach to movement and dance is the basis of the work of Sasha Waltz & Guests' children's and youth dance company at Radialsystem, which has been growing every year for more than 18 years. In 2006, Sasha Waltz consolidated her work with young dancers, which she had begun in 2004 with a project in cooperation with ‘TanzZeit – Tanz in Schulen’ and subsequently continued independently. Since then, the work of Sasha Waltz & Guests' children's and youth dance company has been continuously developed and expanded with a permanent home in our studio at Radialsystem, Berlin. Today, the young dancers are individually supported in four groups divided according to age. Based on playful and experimental approaches, the children and young people can train their movement and further develop their talents.

The Sasha Waltz & Guests Children's and Youth Dance Company is a project by Sasha Waltz & Guests in cooperation with Radialsystem and supported by the Radial Foundation.
