»In C - Community« - Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, with live music by MEUTE

On 7 September, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt will open its new location in Bockenheim with a dance parade through the centre of Frankfurt featuring Sasha Waltz & Guests and 100 participants, accompanied by live music from MEUTE.

The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is temporarily relocating to Frankfurt-Bockenheim and celebrating the opening of its new location with a grand parade through the city. On Sunday, 7 September 2025, the Schirn, together with the internationally renowned dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests and the techno marching band MEUTE, invites you to participate in the participatory project »In C – Community« with around 100 participants.

The parade, featuring professional dancers and amateur groups, will start at the Schirn am Römer and proceed to the temporary venue, the former Dondorf printing house, which has been converted for use by the Kunsthalle. The reason for the move is the energy-efficient renovation of the main building on the Römer.

To mark the opening of the new venue, a performance of »In C – Community« will take place throughout the building. Food and drinks will be provided by Café B by Badias, and there will be a live set by DJ ABIBA.

SASHA WALTZ & GUESTS »IN C – COMMUNITY«

The structured improvisation »In C« was developed in 2021 by Sasha Waltz & Guests and has since been performed in various contexts. The choreography comprises 53 choreographic figures in an innovative open structure and is deliberately not designed as a finished stage piece. »In C« is open to adaptations in all dance styles, to influences from different cultural circles, to professionals and amateurs, to young and old. The active participants and the audience become part of a unique performance that not only represents the democratic principles of participation and equality, but also puts them into practice.

The two-part project, consisting of a parade and a site-specific performance at the new location, has been created especially for the opening event of the Schirn in Bockenheim. The parade will be accompanied musically in an artistic collaboration with the band MEUTE, consisting of eleven wind instruments and percussionists. The legendary marching band will develop an interpretation of the musical basis of the choreography, Terry Riley's groundbreaking minimalist work of the same name, »In C,« and will play individual pieces from its own repertoire.

In addition to dancers from Sasha Waltz & Guests, a total of six dance groups from Frankfurt and the surrounding area will also take part in the parade. Over several months, amateur dancers of all ages learned choreographic figures from »In C« from local professional dancers and members of the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests. The Frankfurt audience, Schirn fans, art and dance enthusiasts are invited to join the procession from the Römer to Bockenheim. Along the way, the professional dancers will encourage the audience to learn simple movement sequences from the choreography and dance along.

MEUTE is an eleven-member techno marching band from Hamburg, which presents new interpretations of techno and house with brass and woodwind instruments and percussion. With the powerful combination of hypnotically insistent techno beats and expressive wind music, the band has created a unique musical genre. It separates electronic music from the DJ desk and generates the energetic impulse directly in the crowd – whether in the streets, in techno clubs, or on big international stages, from the Konzerthaus in Vienna to the Coachella music and arts festival. After the formation of the band in 2015, MEUTE attracted the attention of an international public through their version of »You & Me« by Disclosure (Flume Remix) from 2018. Today the band tours worldwide and is one of the ensembles with the most active presence at festivals in Europe. They supplied several songs for the soundtrack of the fourth season of the television series »Babylon Berlin«. This year they are celebrating their tenth anniversary with the new album »Jubel«.
