Transfer of the piece »Roméo et Juliette« to Teatr Wielki, Łódź
The Premiere will be on 11 May 2024.
With »Roméo et Juliette« (2007), Sasha Waltz turned to one of the most moving love stories in world literature. The story of ill-fated lovers whose families are enemies and whose death only brings insight and reconciliation is one of Shakespeare's best-known works. This dark tragedy inspired Hector Berlioz to compose the dramatic symphony »Roméo et Juliette« for three soloists, two large choirs and orchestra. The Opéra national de Paris and the ballet commissioned Sasha Waltz with the choreography. The »Etoiles« Aurélie Dupont and Hervé Moreau danced the lovers, who only find each other again in death, at the premiere in 2007.
In autumn 2012, »Roméo et Juliette« was added to La Scala's repertoire in Milan.
In April 2015, »Roméo et Juliette« celebrated its premiere in Berlin as a co-production between Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Scala Milan and Sasha Waltz & Guests. »Roméo et Juliette« was danced there for the first time by the dancers of the Sasha Waltz & Guests company, with whom Sasha Waltz had created her third choreographic opera in Berlin after »Dido & Aeneas« in 2005 and »Medea« in 2007, before initially transferring the work to the ballet ensembles in Paris and Milan.
This year, the piece was transferred to the Teatr Wielki in Łódź, Poland, where »Roméo et Juliette« will celebrate its premiere on 11 May 2024.
