Biennale College Dancers dance »In C« at the Teatro alle Tese to live music by the Syntax Ensemble
In 2021, Sasha Waltz & Guests began a vibrant artistic process centred around
Terry Riley’s pioneering minimalist composition »In C« (1964). Inspired by its open concept, Sasha Waltz, together with ten dancers, developed 53 choreographic figures – forming a system for structured improvisation. The choreography allows individual freedom within a set of shared rules, always in relation to the group, echoing the principles of a democratic society. Leading and following remain fluid; roles shift organically among performers.
»In C« becomes a vibrant and colourful dance about individuality within collectivity. Premiering via livestream from Radialsystem, the piece has since captivated international audiences and inspired a growing global dance community. The choreography was documented in video tutorials, making it widely accessible for dancers around the world.
In summer 2025, »In C« came to Venice for the first time: dancers from the Biennale College learned the choreography and performed the piece to live music by the Syntax Ensemble on 20 and 21 July at Teatro
alle Tese.
