Sasha Waltz & Guests meets tanzmainz

A basic idea of »In C« from the beginning was the open transfer of knowledge across national borders, especially against the background of current crises. The individual movement figures were recorded directly in video tutorials, which enable dancers to learn the choreographic material digitally and independently of their location. The piece has no stage design, light and costumes can be adapted. In this way, the transfer of the material to other professional dance companies and corresponding (inter)national collaborations are also facilitated.

In 2025, the two companies Sasha Waltz & Guests and tanzmainz worked together for the first time in a multi-part collaboration: the Berlin-based company kicked off the project with guest performances in Mainz in March. To mark the start of the tanzmainz festival #5 on 26 and 27 March, dancers from both ensembles performed Sasha Waltz's choreography »In C« to music by Terry Riley. Sasha Waltz & Guests also showed the much-toured production »Beethoven 7« as part of the festival on 29 March; all performances at the Staatstheater Mainz were accompanied live by the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz. After that, tanzmainz took »In C« into its current repertoire. In the summer of 2025, performances of »In C« with a mixed cast of dancers from both ensembles, as well as a guest performance by tanzmainz, marked the end of this extraordinary collaboration at Berlin's Radialsystem.
